The University of Maryland Medical Center, in partnership with the ALS Association - DC/MD/VA Chapter, provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art care to people with ALS (PALS) and their families. The Maryland ALS Clinic, at University Specialty Hospital in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, opened in July 2007. The clinic follows the ALS Association's Center model. Meeting rigorous standards, it will become the only certified ALS Center of Excellence in Maryland.
Co-directed by specialists in motor neuron disease and pulmonary medicine, a full healthcare team -- familiar with the unique challenges of ALS -- is in place. This multidisciplinary team includes additional specialty physicians; a social worker; respiratory, speech, physical and occupational therapists; a nutritionist; and a research coordinator.
An ALS -- DC/MD/VA Chapter Patient Services Coordinator integrates chapter services such as support groups and assistance with equipment or assistive technology into the Clinic's care.
The Maryland ALS Clinic offers real value and convenience for PALS and their families, who can see every team member, according to their needs, during an appointment.
The Maryland ALS Clinic offers access to an extraordinary spectrum of medical expertise, practical and emotional support, and clinical trials that can lead to a cure. It is truly one-stop care for PALS and their families, providing renewed hope and a better quality of life. PALS receive confirmation of the ALS diagnosis from a UMMC neurologist before the first clinic visit.
